GM Energy Management are delighted to be working in partnership with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to promote and deliver their latest Grant initiative aimed at SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) - their financial Support Scheme for Energy Audits (SSEA).
The SSEA is a voucher scheme administered by SEAI and delivered by SEAI Registered Energy Auditors, such as ourselves, enables SMEs to have a high quality, energy audit carried out on their operations. The Voucher is awarded to the Applicant (the SME) who will then use it to pay the Auditor, once the audit is complete.
The Voucher, provided by SEAI, has a maximum value of €2,000 (ex. VAT). In the majority of cases, this will be sufficient to cover the entire cost of the Energy Audit. SMEs from all sectors are encouraged to apply. The scheme is open to SME’s who met the following criteria:\n- €10,000 per annum on energy\n- Tax compliant\n- Be located in the Republic of Ireland\n- Have a CRO number\n- Are not obligated by SI 426:2014 to complete an audit
The Energy Audit is designed to help you to understand your energy use and will make recommendations on the most effective ways to reduce your energy bills. It will look at electricity, gas, oil, diesel, and any other energy sources that are consumed in your premises. If applicable, it may also include transport fuel for the company fleet.
At its conclusion, you will receive an Energy Action Plan that will help you to prioritise the energy saving opportunities which will have the biggest impact on your business. You will also get an in-depth, jargon-free Energy Audit Report that will explain what your current energy profile looks like, how much you can save and what impact it will have on your business’s carbon footprint. Overall, it’s an invaluable tool for any organisation that is under internal or external pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and improve sustainability.
The Energy Audit will generally consist of 3 main steps:
- Collection & review of the business’s energy data,
- A site survey conducted by an SEAI accredited Energy Auditor
- Production of an Energy Audit Report
The application process, which opened on the 19thJuly 2021, is designed to be fast and straightforward. Once awarded, the voucher must be used within 8 month period.

This is a really exciting opportunity for all SMEs who really want to save energy, but don’t know where to start. This scheme from SEAI will support high-quality, practical energy audits that will clearly lay out what they should do, and how they should do it. Armed with this information, our SMEs will be able to take action on energy, which will save them money and make a vital contribution to our climate change goals.
Eamon Ryan, Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications
Energy audits really empower businesses, providing them with the information they need to make the best decisions for their organisation. This is also a great opportunity for energy auditors to provide their expertise to the SME sector on where energy is being used and what actions are going to be most effective at improving energy efficiency.
William Walsh, CEO, SEAI
